Just Google Kulekhani and there pops up Kulekhani Dam. This is true but Hike to Kulekhani is something more than the sum total of that. It is more about local culture, sparsed natural beauty—heart capturing a view of harmonious mountains, greenery and a lake, local food, and adventure.

Also known as Markhu hike, a trip to Kulekhani is a four-day package that will introduce you with a real picture of the countryside Nepal and lifestyle of local inhabitants.

Hike to Kulekhani or Chitlang Hike begins from a cable car station that is situated near Thankot. We reach the station in a private vehicle. Experiencing a cable car for nearly 12 minutes is another best aspect of this hike. It will bring us to Chandragiri hill which is at an altitude of 2,400m. The view of mountains from this vantage point—Chandragiri—is awe-inspiring. If the weather is clear, you will get an opportunity to witness Mt. Everest from here. The temple of Bhaleshwor Mahadev at the top of Chandragiri hill is also an attraction for tourists.

After spending an hour here, we head towards Markhu. We pass through greenery amid hills and get in Chitlang village. The village is popular for producing goat cheese. We will lunch in Chitlang.

Markhu is our next destination. Once again we will pass through the greenery. The distant view of Indra Sarobar Lake is so impressive. We will spend a night on the bank of this lake. Bonfire in the evening is another key feature of this hike.

In the morning, we will boat in the lake and also pave the way to Kulekhani Dam.

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu

Namaste and welcome to Kathmandu—the capital city of Nepal.

Upon your arrival, we will receive you at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) and lead you to the hotel.

Day 02: Drive to  cable car station near Thankot/Hike to Markhu via Chitlang

After breakfast, we will drive towards cable car station. It is slightly more than half an hour ride from Thamel. Enjoying a ride on a cable car and witnessing greenery, we arrive at the top of Chandragiri.

From here, we will proceed towards Chitlang. We will be passing through greenery and it is one of the crowd-less trails of the country. In Chitlang, we will have our lunch. The hike further stretches to Markhu.

Day 03: Explore Markhu/Hike to Kulekhani Dam/Drive to Kathmandu

The day is going to be interesting and exciting! Things to do in Markhu:

  • Boating in the lake
  • Visit Kulekhani Dam which is a is a rock-fill dam on the Kulekhani River
  • Observe monasteries in Pharping

We will manage private vehicle for you so that you may get in Kathmandu comfortably. On the way to the capital, we will stopover at Pharping. It is a beautiful village that is popular among Buddhist people as there are a few numbers of monasteries. By the evening, we will be in Kathmandu.

Day 04: Back to your Destination

So, finally, here ends your short hike to Sailung. As per rule, we will drop off you at TIA three hours prior to your scheduled flight. We hope you enjoyed your brief Nepal stay. Enjoy your flight.
