The world at present is witnessing a shift from destination-based tourism to experience-based tourism, and Nepal—one of the key tourism destinations of the globe—is also experiencing the same trend.
The surge in demand for experience-based tourism is primarily attributed to the increase in the volume of millennial tourists due to which key touristic destinations—Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan—of this Himalayan nations have been attracting an impressive chunk of tourists every year. One of the prominent reasons behind surging tourists in the mentioned areas is due to the unique experience that the areas can extend to millennial touring enthusiasts.
According to the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA), a total of nearly one million tourists landed in this ancient city, Kathmandu, in 2018. Similarly, Pokhara attracted more than a million tourists (domestic and foreigners) followed by Chitwan, where approximately a total of 120,000 foreigners (excluding Indian) experienced jungle safari in 2018.
Further, Nepal is also emerging as a key holiday destination and the statistics by the MoCTCA also affirms this fact. As per it, more than 60 percent of the tourist arrived with the purpose of holiday celebration and pleasure in this South Asian nation in 2018. At this time around, the figure is estimated to rise significantly as the country envisions to land two million tourists with Visit Nepal Year 2020 campaign.
From this prospect, with its key four UNESCO listed World Cultural Heritage sites—Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath, Bouddhanath, and Swoyambhunath—Kathmandu will be luring a significant number of tourists. The durbar square not only represents ancient Kathmandu but also resembles the culture and traditions that the country has been practicing from the past 2,000 years. In addition, Pashupatinath, Bouddhanath, and Swoyambhunath will play a key role in attracting both categories of tourists who have faith in Hinduism and Buddhism.
As a promising holiday destination, Pokhara alone is expected to witness two million tourists (domestic plus international) by the end of 2020. As a gateway to Annapurna region trek, and with Towering mountains, tranquil lakes, and a prime destination to experience adventure tourism—the City of Lakes will entertain all tourists who plan to spend their holidays in this part of the world.
Chitwan National Park, on the other hand, is another UNESCO listed World Heritage site that has been attracting jungle safari enthusiasts from all over the world since its establishment, 1973. Located in the low-land of the country—Terai, the park is home to some of the rare species of animals such as Royal Bengal Tiger and one-horned rhino. According to the park, more than 700 species of animals and 450 species of birds are found here.
